Another five minutes driving brings you into
the centre of Kalamata with its modern shops, cafes, restaurants
and banks around the 'platea' (square). Just to the north
of the platea is the market area and 'old town' with numerous
fascinating small, traditional shops overlooked by the Frankish
castle.

Kalamata is a wealthy and unspoiled Greek City, not frequented
much by foreign tourists but loved by Greeks from all over
the country.
Travelling from Archontiko in the other direction, it's about
25 minutes drive-time to Kardamili, the 'capital' of Exo Mani,
passing over the Rindomo Gorge and through mountain villages
such as Kambos, Stavropigio and Prosilio. Beyond Kardamayli
is Stoupa - the main resort of the area - Agios Nikolaos and
then the open road through Mani down to the tip of the Peninsula.
(See 'About the Area').
